How to Fix a Badly Scratched CD

Computers and CD players are often unable to read badly scratched CDs. A badly scratched CD can often be fixed using a fine-grained cleaning product such as toothpaste or Brasso. However, there is no guarantee that every CD will be able to be recovered using this method. If you are able to fix a badly scratched CD, it is advised that you make a backup copy of the CD after doing so.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply toothpaste or Brasso to a clean cloth.

    • 2

Rub this cloth, using a moderate amount of pressure, onto the badly scratched areas of the CD. While doing so, the toothpaste or Brasso will slowly wear away the top plastic layer of the CD. As the plastic wears away, so will the scratches.

    • 3

Take a clean cloth and dampen it with rubbing alcohol after most of the scratches have worn away.

    • 4

Clean the toothpaste or Brasso residue off of the CD using this cloth.

    • 5

Allow the CD to dry and then test the CD in a computer or CD player.
