How to Fix CD Errors

CD errors can often be fixed by repairing the read/write surface of the CD you are having trouble with. Using a few simple home remedies involving rubbing alcohol, furniture polish, and toothpaste will fix most read errors caused by damage to the surface of the disc. Once repaired, it is always a good idea to make a backup copy of the CD for future use.

Instructions

    • 1

Wet a cloth with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Gently wipe the cloth across the surface of the CD to remove fingerprints, grease, and other residue that might be causing errors when reading the CD. After cleaning the CD, allow it to air dry before placing it in the CD drive and testing for errors.

    • 2

Spray a small amount of furniture polish on a cloth. Gently wipe the cloth on the surface of the CD in a circular motion. This will often repair errors on a lightly scratched CD.

    • 3

Squeeze a bead of toothpaste onto a cloth and rub the deeper scratches on the CD with this cloth. The fine, grainy texture of the toothpaste will slowly wear away the plastic surface of the CD and remove deep scratches from the CD. After completing this step, clean the CD with rubbing alcohol by following Step 1 above. This will fix most CD errors caused by deeper scratches
