How to Recycle Jewel Cases

So you've converted to using an iPod or MP3 player, or you keep your CDs in a zippered wallet and are now left with a large number of jewel CD cases. Because they are often made from molded polystyrene, jewel cases are not recycled easily. But there are options that help decrease the unused stacks, including recycling them through companies that accept jewel cases and other techno trash or using the cases to make art and picture frames.

Instructions

    • 1

Recycle jewel cases through Green Disk, a company that recycles cases for $6.95 per 20 pounds. Go to the Services page on the Green Disk website and look for the "Technotrash--Pack It" option on the upper right-hand side. Enter the correct weight of your case collection and proceed to the website's checkout to pay for this recycling option, which includes paying for shipping.

Put cases up on Freecycle.org if you do not wish to recycle them through Green Disk. Freecycle is a nonprofit network of people and businesses who post your unwanted items for others to take and vice versa. According to PlanetGreen.com, small independent bands can use jewel cases as packaging for their own CDs.

Reuse the cases for a variety of practical and artistic projects. Prop a case open and place a recipe inside it for easy reading and avoidance of kitchen splatters. Use a case for storing eye shadow, as a mini dry-erase board, for wall art projects, as picture frames or for any other artistic projects you can imagine or find described on the Internet.
