How to Fix Scratches on a Music CD

Fix scratches on a music CD with household items such as a banana, furniture polish or toothpaste. Each of these items is effective at improving the performance of a scratched music CD. Once the CD is repaired, consider making a backup copy of it to prevent losing its data through further wear and tear.

Instructions

    • 1

Peel a banana and, using a circular motion, rub the banana over the scratches on your music CD. Then use the peel of the banana and rub it over the scratches using this same motion. Doing so fills the scratches with the banana's waxy residue, making it easier for a CD player to read the disc. After finished, spray the surface of the CD with glass cleaner. Then wipe any remaining banana residue off the CD using a clean cloth.

Spray furniture polish onto a clean cloth and, with a circular motion, rub it over the scratches on your music CD. Doing so fills the scratches with furniture polish, making it easier for a CD player to read the disc. When finished, dampen a clean cloth with rubbing alcohol and wipe the surface of the CD to clean it. Allow the disc to dry before using it.

Squeeze some toothpaste onto a clean cloth and rub it over the scratches on your music CD, applying pressure as you do so. This wears away the top plastic layer of the CD and smooths out the scratches in doing so. When finished, dampen a clean cloth with rubbing alcohol and wipe the surface of the CD to clean away any remaining toothpaste. Allow the disc to dry before using it.
