Dancing Schools in Helena, Montana

Helena, Montana, is the state capital and has, for the region, a sizable population approaching 30,000 residents; in this way Helena is a cultural center for the state. There are symphony, theater and arts programs, including two professional dance companies. Consequently, there are also many cultural opportunities for children and aspiring dancers. Helena has four well-established dance schools that are staffed by trained, qualified and experienced instructors.
  1. Big Sky Dance Works

    • Break dance is just one of the cutting-edge styles at Big Sky Dance Works.

      Offering classes in hip hop, break dance, lyrical, jazz, Latin, West Coast swing, wedding and children's hip hop, the schedule is packed with plenty of opportunities to learn a new dance style. Classes run from September to May as a single term. The tuition is paid on a monthly basis and ranges from $45 a month for an hour of dance instruction a week up to $190 a month for unlimited class times. There are classes, often four or five a day, running Monday through Friday, which are taught by the five different professional dance teachers.

    Tiernan Irish Dancers

    • Traditional Irish dancing is taught and performed in contest events through the Tiernan Irish Dancers school.

      Irish step-dance classes are offered for children ages 5 to 18 every Tuesday and Wednesday each month. They provide instruction for traditional regional dances including those from Donegal & Galway, Cork & Derry, Kilkenny & Limerick and Setanta. The school has a good reputation, as it is the sister school of the renowned Trinity Academy of Irish Dance from Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison.

    Creative Arts Center of Helena

    • Learn ballet and perhaps join the Premiere Dance Company through the Creative Arts Center.

      The dance program that is offered at Creative Arts Center allows children as young as 3 years old to enjoy "Creative Movement" classes and older kids of 5 to 6 to take pre-ballet classes. The rest of the children who enroll have more options, with classes that include ballet, pointe, jazz, tap and hip hop. In total, more than 20 classes are offered each week with the help of four professional instructors. The Premiere Dance Company is also run through the Creative Arts Center and puts on a version of the Nutcracker, with ballet performers trained in the official Russian style of ballet. Students ages 13 to 18 try out for the company. The cost for classes is between $40 and 264, as of 2011, depending on how many classes are taken (ranging from one to eight classes a week).

    Queen City Ballet

    • It's not just ballet--learn musical theater dance and other styles at Queen City Ballet.

      This ballet school in Helena offers classes and instruction with the assistance of 10 classically trained ballet instructors. Children as young as 18 months can join their parents for dance time, while an actual introduction to dance with instruction begins at 3 years old. There are pre-ballet, ballet, open ballet and pointe programs as well as jazz, tap, musical theater dance, and junior hip hop. There is also a performance group that does shows, including Cinderella and Defile for the 2011 year. Fees range from $80 to $300 a month for structured classes, or there are variable hourly rates.
