The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre is a highly acclaimed, low-cost comedy club that features stand-up, sketch comedy and improv. While UCB often hosts big-name comedians like Tina Fey, Robin Williams, Conan O'Brien and Will Farrell, it also cultivates rising local talent. UCB, whose stated mission is to educate the populace about arts and to support young comics, provides comedy classes as well as consistently high quality shows. While the Chelsea venue does serve alcoholic beverages, it caters to all ages and has no drink minimum. Prices range from free to $8, and there are generally four shows a night.

The National Comedy Theatre in New York's Times Square offers "clean" improv comedy shows comprised of various games and scenes which require audience participation. According to the theatre's website, the format is similar to that of "Whose Line is it Anyway." The shows, which occur every Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m., feature four to six comedians and cost $15 for adults or $12 for students. They are appropriate for all age groups, and there are no drink minimums. Special holiday-themed productions are offered for Valentine's Day, Halloween and Christmas. In addition to shows, the National Comedy Theatre sponsors a two-week summer comedy camp for children and teens.

The Broadway Comedy Club, located in Midtown West, offers three to five different shows a night, every night of the week, with the first typically starting at 8:00 p.m. Each show features at least four national headliners, including comics from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, HBO Comedy Arts Festival, NBC's Last Comic Standing and other TV comedy programs, and runs for 90 minutes to two hours. Famous past headliners include Tim Allen, Karith Foster, Judah Friedlander, Myq Kaplan, Tracy Morgan, Rosie O'Donnell and Damon Wayans. Weekend admission costs $20 and weeknight admission is $15. In addition, customers must purchase a minimum of two drinks, which may be alcoholic or non-alcoholic. A menu consisting of bar food like burgers, nachos and cheesecake is available.
