Comedy Clubs in Beaumont, Texas

Beaumont has had its fair share of success with famous funnyman Slade Ham and companies Sweet Leaf Tea and Gulf Oil (now Chevron) all coming from the city. The tourism company Beaumont CVB describes the city of Beaumont as "Texas with a little something extra" (See References 1). However, its comedy club scene would have you think otherwise, seeing as it is distinctly non-existent.
  1. Beaumont, Texas

    • Beaumont is part of Jefferson County, Texas and, according to the Census, boasted a population of 1,339.37 people per square mile in the year 2000. Initially a small rice and lumber town, Beaumont became one of the first oil-producing cities in the United States. (See References 1)

    Comedy, Texas

    • Co-run with Lee Melton by comedian and Beaumont resident Slade Ham, "Comedy, Texas" hosted stand-up comedians in Beaumont, TX. The club eventually closed down after five years of service (See References 4) due to pressures from the smoking ban and co-owner Ham having other commitments in Los Angeles, CA (See References 2).

    GK's Comedy Club

    • GK's Comedy Club lived a shorter life than Comedy, Texas. With owner Danny Martinez at the helm, it closed down in 2002 after just two years of making the Beaumont public giggle.

The Fall of Beaumont's Comedy Scene

    • Eric Beilitz, a graduate of Maryland University, warns comedians in his comedy etiquette contribution to the Art of Manliness: There are people from all different backgrounds in the audience and the comedian has the responsibility of entertaining two-thirds of them or risk never being invited back. The comedy club itself is in charge of maintaining order to offer a good-quality show to its patrons. (See References 3)

Using Beilitz's open advice, the comedian clearly will not succeed if the audience is not willing. It is possible that the talent at GK's Comedy Club and Comedy, Texas did not meet the standard of what the people from Beaumont expected or wanted. Equally, the comedy clubs both may not have offered the well-ordered fun that a comedy patron so desires.

The Fertle Family became so popular that they appeared on both "Saturday Night Live" and MTV.
