Comedy Clubs in Manhattan, New York

New York City is the nation’s capital for comedy, with plenty of laughs from touring big-name acts as well as yet-undiscovered local talent. If you want to test your own comedy chops, you can even participate in some New York comedy clubs’ stand-up and improv classes. Guests must be 18 or older for admission at all the clubs listed, and advance reservations are recommended, especially for weekend shows.
  1. Comic Strip Live

    • Comic Strip Live on Manhattan’s Upper East Side was voted Best Comedy Club by AOL City Guide. The cabaret-style theater boasts a lineup that showcases “all pros, all the time.” A light menu of snacks, pizza and Chinese food items is available. Regular show times are Monday through Thursday at 8:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.; and Sunday at 8 p.m. A two-drink minimum purchase is required. Special 18-and-under “prom” comedy shows are scheduled from time to time, or can be arranged off-site.

    Comix Comedy Club

    • Comix Comedy Club is located in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District and features sketch, improv and alternative comedy, as well as musical and variety acts. The 5,000-square-foot venue has modern decor and acoustics, with spacious seating for 300. A full menu is available during shows, including a three-course prix-fixe dinner with wine for under $50. Typical show times are Monday through Thursday at 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 8 and 10:30 p.m.; and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. All shows have a two-drink minimum.     Upright Citizen's Brigade Theatre

    • The brainchild of entertainers from the popular Comedy Central program of the same name (Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh and Ian Roberts), the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theatre is an affordable club for viewing fresh comedic talent nightly. Located in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, the 150-seat theater sometimes features as many as four shows per evening. As of January 2010, the price is always $10 or less, sometimes free, and never with a drink-purchase minimum. There is, however, a budget-friendly bar. The theater has been recognized by Rolling Stone and AOL, and has been featured in several popular Hollywood films.
