How to Recycle Scented Pencils

Scented pencils are graphite pencils that give off a scent, either through their outer covering or through the graphite itself, depending on the brand. They commonly contain natural fragrances, such as that of fruit. They are popular among school-aged children, as they can add a bit of whimsy to regular tasks such as homework and note taking. Once these pencils get worn down, through use and sharpening, you don't just have to throw them out or set them aside. You can recycle scented pencils and put them to good use in a variety of ways.

Instructions

  1. Wind Chime

    • 1

Rub the tip of each pencil onto a piece of sandpaper, until the tips are dull. This process makes it safe for you to hang them in your home.

    • 2

Cut one 6-inch piece of thread for each pencil that you intend to use.

    • 3

Tie each piece of thread around the eraser, or flat top, of a pencil.

    • 4

Tie the loose end of every thread to the bottom of a hanger. Tie them as tightly as possible. Place them as you see fit, organizing them in an appealing pattern if each pencil is a different color.

    • 5

Cut off the short half of the thread created by the knots.

    • 6

Hang up the new wind chime, either outside or inside, near a window, where you can enjoy watching the pencils move in the light.

    Pencil Holder

    • 7

Collect enough scented pencils to cover the exterior of a plastic cup.

    • 8

Sharpen the pencils down until they are all about the same size.

    • 9

Rub the tip of each pencil on some sand paper, until the pencils are dull.

    • 10

Place a line of acrylic craft glue along one side of each pencil.

    • 11

Secure the pencils side by side, to the outside of a plastic cup, with the tips facing upward.

    Wall Hanging

    • 12

Write your name on a blank piece of card stock. Write the letters as large as possible, or to suit the size of the scented pencils.

    • 13

Place the pencils over the top of the lines that make up your name. Overlap some if necessary.

    • 14

Glue the pencils in place using acrylic craft glue.

    • 15

Allow the piece to set for half an hour before hanging it up on display.
