How to Print Jewel Cases

Rewritable CDs and DVDs have opened up backup and personalization of portable media for the home user. Since the CD R/W drive and the DVD R/W devices have become common to most home users, making jewel cases for personalized information on these media has become more important. The addition of high quality and inexpensive full color printers allows for visually appealing covers. With only minimal equipment this can be a simple process. It also lends itself to user creativity.

Instructions

A standard CD Jewel case consists of a front cover, an insert and a back cover

Measure the size of the jewel case that the cover will be used for. Take the dimensions as inside all edges and yet sufficient to catch any tabs that might be in the case. Record the measurement for the front and back covers and the spine. The half-size case does not need a spine piece. The standard jewel case front cover is 4 7/8" by 4 13/16". The back cover for a case with a CD holder insert is 5 7/16" by 4 13/16". If a spine is needed, add 5/16" to the back cover as a separate piece printed on the same paper

Many software have other capabilities besides the original purpose.

Open a new file in Microsoft Word with 11" by 8 1/2" page (landscape orientation)and default margins. Draw a box the size of the front cover for the jewel case with 1.5 points for outline width. Create a text box inside this image box. Type in the text content for the CD. Generate a text box 4 13/16" by 3/8". Change the orientation of the text 90° so it reads sideways from top to bottom if used. Save as a template file

Re-open the template file. Insert the appropriate text for the CD cover desired. Confirm that the front and back covers are correct. Add the color features desired. Save as a new file with a unique name. Print the covers on a color printer if available. Cut along the insides of the border lines. Fold over the spine flap, if used. Remove the CD holder insert if it is in the jewel case. Insert the back cover with the spine, where appropriate, in the spine direction. Insert the CD holder again. Install the front cover under the tabs in the jewel case.
