How to Open DVD Cases

DVDs bring the latest blockbuster and your favorite classic movies into your home, but getting them open can be frustrating. The companies that produce DVDs package them tightly to protect the discs from damage, and even after removing the outer wrapping, the cases are tricky. Whether playing a movie for a kids’ slumber party or entertaining with a backyard movie night, opening DVDs properly will get you watching your film faster, without damaging it.

Instructions

Hold the DVD case with the front facing you. Use your finger to feel for the groove on the right side of the case. Cut the shrink-wrap away using a small paring or utility knife, cutting gently into the groove first. Pull the shrink-wrap away from the DVD. Do not scar your DVD case by using your knife directly on the case.

Remove the security tape around the top of the case. There may also be security tape along the sides of the case. Remove the tape by peeling it away.

Hold the DVD case with the cover facing you and the hinge or spine on the left. Open DVD by pulling up from the right side of the box, like opening a book. Some cases come with plastic latches on the right side that you must undo by folding them away from you before you can open the case.
