How to Back Up MP3s to DVD Data Formats

One power surge or spilled drink can wipe out the thousands of MP3 files that you've spent years collecting. To preserve your music collection, back it up to a data DVD. The Windows Explorer component of Windows 7 can burn DVD data discs without requiring any additional third-party software. To ensure the highest degree of compatibility for the burned DVD, use the Mastered format for burning.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a blank DVD into the burner. Click "Burn files to disc using Windows Explorer" in the pop-up window that opens.

    • 2

Click "With a CD/DVD Player". Click "Next". A Windows Explorer burning window opens.

    • 3

Press the Windows key and "E" simultaneously to launch a new instance of Windows Explorer. Navigate to the directory that contains the MP3s you want to back up.

    • 4

Drag and drop the MP3s into the first Windows Explorer window. Repeat the process for any other MP3s you want to back up. A single-layer DVD can hold 4.7 GB of MP3s; a double-layer DVD can hold 8.5 GB.

    • 5

Click "Burn to Disc" in the Windows Explorer toolbar. Type in a name for the disc and select a recording speed from the drop-down menu. Click "Next" to burn the DVD.
