How to Input Subtitles to AVI

The AVI video file format doesn't support subtitles without permanently overlaying them onto the image. However, with most multimedia players, you can associate an external subtitles file – such as SRT, SUB or IDX format files – with an AVI video file. This is particularly useful if you want a single video file to have subtitles available in multiple languages. When using an external subtitle file, you do not have to re-encode the AVI video, which can be a lengthy and technically challenging process.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the folder on your computer containing the AVI file that you want to enhance with subtitles.

    • 2

Drag and drop the subtitle file into the same folder as the AVI file.

    • 3

Right-click on the subtitle file and select "Rename" from the context menu. Its title becomes editable.

    • 4

Type the exact same name for the subtitle file as the AVI file, excluding the file extension. For example, if the AVI video file is called "sample-video.avi," rename the subtitle file to "sample-video.srt." This example assumes that you are using a subtitle file with an SRT file extension.

Turn subtitles on in your multimedia player and load the AVI file. Consult the player's instructions or website for details on how to do this. The subtitle file with the same name as the video file will automatically be overlaid onto the AVI's image.
