How to Hard Code an SRT File Into a Movie

The SRT file format adds subtitles to a corresponding video file. Many multimedia players allow you to use external subtitle files to easily add different languages to a single video file. Hardcoding is a process that permanently overlays an SRT subtitle file over a video, so it cannot be removed or edited. The benefit of this permanent subtitle solution is that multimedia players which do not accept external subtitle files can still display the movie's accompanying text.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a video editing software package that allows you to work with external subtitle files, such as VirtualDub, Nero Vision Express or AVI ReComp. Launch the program once installation has completed.

    • 2

Drag and drop your video file into the video editing software's work space to open it. If the drag and drop operation is not supported, click the "File" menu and select "Open." Navigate to your video file and select it in the dialog box.

    • 3

Open the corresponding SRT subtitle file and preview the output video to ensure the text matches the speech. The method for opening the subtitles file will differ depending on your video editing software, but it's typically acquired by applying a subtitle filter to the video you are currently working on. Consult the software's instructions for details on opening subtitle files or applying editing filters to your video.

    • 4

Adjust the settings for the position, style and color of the hardcoded subtitles. Check the output video again to test the subtitle settings.

    • 5

Select the type of video compression you want to use when saving the file with the hardcoded subtitles. For example, set the compression type as Xvid, Divx, AVI or MPG. Saving as an uncompressed video file will result in a prohibitively large file size.

    • 6

Save the video to your computer with a different file name than the original. The video editing software processes the video, re-encoding it with the subtitles permanently added to the image.
