Choose the movie you want to burn to a DVD. A specific program is needed on your computer to burn the DVD correctly. Based on the program you have, you can create menus for your movie as well as break the movie down into scenes. Manufacturers such as Roxio and Nero create DVD-burning software that is compatible with most computers. If your computer is equipped with the DVD burner, a standard program might be installed.

Select the movie you want to burn onto a DVD. Most DVD-burning software will ask for the movie file. Browse your folder for the desired movie and click "Open."

Place the DVD-R disc into your computer's DVD-R drive. Make sure you have the correct disc format that corresponds with the drive. Note that while DVD-R discs can only be burned once and can only be used with a DVD-R drive, Askdavetaylor.com states that a DVD-RW disc can be erased and rewritten up to 1000 times. DVD-RW discs can only be used with a DVD-RW drive.

Push the compartment that holds the disc into the drive. Click "Burn." During the burning process the movie will transfer onto the DVD. It may take 30 to 60 minutes for the movie to transfer to the DVD. Once it is finished, the DVD drive will open or a window will pop up on the screen indicating that the DVD is complete.
