Read the back of the DVD case to determine if it already contains a digital copy on the DVD. If it does, simply insert the disc into your computer and follow the instructions on the main menu of the DVD.
Open "Computer" from the "Start" menu to check the available space on your C drive. DVDs are typically large files, and you should compare the size of the DVD with the available space to be certain your computer can accommodate the file. Determine the exact size of the DVD by right-clicking on its icon in "Computer" and reading the size under the "Properties" tab.
Right click on the desktop, then click "New" and "Folder" to create a folder for your movie. Label it with the movie's title or something similar that is easily recognizable.
Choose a DVD ripper program from the Internet and install it on your computer. There are several available online, and most are free or can be obtained for a free trial. According to a 2010 poll at Lifehacker.com, the five most popular programs are Handbrake, DVD Shrink, DVDFab, DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD.
Insert the DVD into your computer. If it starts playing, press "Stop."
Select the DVD drive in the main window of the DVD ripper. It will locate the DVD.
Click on the folder where you wish to transfer the DVD.
Press "Start." The DVD ripping process should take approximately 30 minutes.
