How to Transfer 16mm Film to DVD

It is common to clean your basement or attic and find boxes of old photographs and home movies. Some people may even discover old 16mm home movies. Finding a working 16mm projector can be a pain, which makes showing your movies to people or just watching them for your own sense of nostalgia difficult and time consuming. Luckily, you can transfer them to DVDs, so you'll be taking copies of your home movies over to friends' houses in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Project your film onto a screen or a white wall, using a 16mm projector. The clearer the picture and the smoother and whiter the surface, the better the end result will be.

    • 2

Place a digital camera, preferably one that records directly to DVD, on a tripod. Any smooth surface works, but a tripod allows for maximum flexibility while maintaining a stable and steady picture. Check the focus and white balance of the camera and make sure everything is in working order.

    • 3

Record projected film using the digital camera. Line up your frame perfectly so you're not losing any information.

    • 4

Transfer the films, which will now be raw video data, to your computer. Once there, load them into any DVD burning software and burn them as movie discs. Pick menus, add music and even enhance colors and picture quality. Once you've done this burn your DVD.
