How to Fix an MKV File

The Matroska (MKV) video file format is usually reserved for larger, hi-definition video files that are created from Blu-ray and HDDVD discs. These files can sometimes become corrupted during transfer from one hard disk to another. This is usually because they are so large and the retrieving hard drive might go to sleep in the middle of the transfer. Fixing an MKV file is very simple, but can only be done by taking the file apart (splitting the audio from the video) and mixing it back together. You will need to use two products to fix an MKV file.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install both TSmuxer and MKVMerge GUI (See Resources). Open TSmuxer and click the "Add" button at the top. A new window will appear. Select your MKV file. You will see the list of files inside the MKV.

    • 2

Click the "Demux" button at the bottom of TSmuxer and click the "Browse" button. Select a place to save the files after they are taken out of the MKV. Click "OK" and "Start Demuxing" to complete the process.

    • 3

Open MKVMerge GUI and click "Add" from the top. Select the files that were removed from the MKV in step two from the window that appears. Click "OK" and click "Start Muxing" to recreate the MKV files properly. When the process completes, the MKV file will be fixed and playable.
