How to Change a Media File to MP3

You may want to change a media file to a MP3 so that you can put it on an MP3 player, put it on a MP3 CD or play it with a MP3-compatible software program. Changing a media file to a MP3 is a process that you can complete with a free audio software converter. Among the free programs available for completing this task are iTunes, Switch and dBpoweramp (see Resources).

Instructions

  1. iTunes

      Open iTunes.

      Open the iTunes preferences menu. If using a PC, click "File," "Preferences." If using a Mac, click "iTunes," "Preferences."

      Click the "Import Settings" button inside the "General" tab.

      Click the "Import Using" menu and select the "MP3 Encoder" option.

      Click "OK" to confirm the change.

      Click "OK" to exit the menu.

      Drag the media file you want to change to a MP3 into iTunes.

      Highlight the media file, click "Advanced" and click "Create MP3 Version." After the conversion process, a MP3 file will appear below the original media file.

    Switch

      Open Switch.

      Click the "Add Files" button and select the media file you want to change to MP3.

      Click the "Output Format" menu and choose ".mp3."

      Click "Browse" to select an "Output Folder" for your media file.

      Click "Convert" and the media file will be converted to MP3.

    dBpoweramp

      Open dBpoweramp.

      Click the "Browse" button and select the media file you want to change to MP3.

      Click the "Folder" button to choose an "Output Location" for your media file.
