How to Do a Watermelon Crawl

A song and a line dance, "The Watermelon Crawl" was released in 1994 by country singer Tracy Byrd and became No. 4 hit in the U.S. The second single released on his album of that year, the song became a popular line dance at clubs. A relatively simple set of steps is followed to the song which is has a dual message. The song is about having a great time and drinking at a watermelon festival but sends the message not to drink and drive. The song instructs "if you drink don't drive do the watermelon crawl."

Instructions

    • 1

Do heel, toe, cha-cha-cha as the first step. The right toe is touched next to the left, then the right heel is touched next to the left. Both are done in a timed tapping motion to the music. Finally the cha-cha-cha rocking motion is added in right, left, right succession.

    • 2

Reverse the first step tapping the left toe next to the right, the right heel next to the left, then the cha-cha-cha again in left, right, left. These first two steps cover the first eight beats.

    • 3

Step forward on the right foot and do a low kick with the left. Step back on the left foot, then tap your right toe to the floor behind you. Repeat the sequence a second time.

    • 4

Grapevine to the right. Grapevine is done by stepping to the side with the right foot, bringing the left foot to the right behind the right foot, then again stepping to the right on the right foot. Finally, bring the left foot to the right -- this time next to your right foot.

    • 5

Grapevine to the left by doing the same grapevine sequence but starting with the left foot and moving to the left side this time. Move your left foot to the left, right foot to the left behind, then left foot step left again. This time, before finishing, do a quarter turn to the left, then bring right foot next to the left in a sliding or scuff motion.

    • 6

Forward slide by stepping a large forward step with your right foot. Slide the left foot up to the position next to the right, taking two counts to move. Stomp or clap or both on the next count. Take a large step back on the left foot, slide the right back to the position next to the left, then stomp and clap again.

    • 7

Bend the left knee, bend the right knee, then repeat to cover the next four beats. Pivot by stepping forward on the right foot, pivot a half turn to the left shifting your weight to your left foot. Step forward on the right foot, pivot another half turn to the left and shift weight to the left foot again.

    • 8

Repeat step sequences until the song ends.
