Watermelon Crawl Dance Steps

The Watermelon Crawl is a country line dance that emerged with the song "Watermelon Crawl" in 1994. The song appeared on country singer Tracy Lawrence's album "No Ordinary Man." The dance consists of a pattern of steps that stretch over 40 counts during the song. The dance demands a combination of common, simple steps that you can learn with a little time and practice.
  1. Counts 1 - 8

    • Tap your right toe inward, followed by your right heel. Follow with a cha-cha-cha move led by your right foot. This is where you quickly step with the right foot, the left foot and then with the right foot again. Then tap your left toe, left heel, and then follow with another cha-cha-cha led by your left foot.

    Counts 9 - 16

    • Step forward with your right foot. Kick your left foot forward with a low, swinging kick. Step backward with your left foot, and extend your right foot behind you as you tap your right toe. Repeat the sequence.

    Counts 17-24

    • Grapevine to your right. This means that you step to the right with your right foot, bring your left foot behind your right, and then step right once more with your right foot. End by touching your left foot to the floor next to your right foot. Grapevine to your right. Perform the same steps in the opposite direction with one exception: this time you will turn at the end of the move. Step left with your left foot. Step left by bringing your right foot behind your left. Step left again with your right foot, and then swing your right foot around as you turn your body one quarter of a turn to the left. End by touching your right foot to the floor next to your left foot.

    Counts 25 - 32

    • Step forward with your right foot (big step), and slide your left foot up toward your right. Follow with a clap. Step backward with your left foot (big step), and slide your right foot back toward your left. End with another clap.

    Counts 33 - 40

    • Perform slight knee bends in this order: left, right, left, right. Then step forward with your right foot and turn your body one half turn (you'll be facing in the opposite direction) as you step with your left foot. Step forward again, turn one half turn and step with your left foot (you'll be facing back the same way again). Begin the whole dance again. If you performed all the moves correctly, you should be facing one fourth of a turn to your left from your original position.
