As a warm-up, get used to keeping rhythm to the downbeat of the music. Clap your hands or stamp your feet to the bass beat of any music you like.
Starting with your left foot, step in place to the music. You should be able to move comfortably with the pace of the music. If you have trouble stepping in place to the rhythm, choose slower music.
Continue stepping to the music, but add a short kick to each step before placing each foot back on the ground. The kick is short and straight from the knee, like you are kicking a small ball in front of you. This is a warm-up exercise to get you ready for clogging.
Kick forward with the left foot. Then step in place three times. So the sequence is "kick left, step left, step right, step left." Repeat this until you are comfortable. This is the first part of the dance sequence.
Kick forward with the right foot, then step in place three times. You can count in your head, "kick right, step right, step left, step right." Practice this until you are comfortable with it. This is the second part of the dance sequence.
Keep alternating left kick, step left, step right, step left. Then right kick, step right, step left, step right. Practice to the music until you have it down pretty well.
Standing on your right foot, lift your left foot and let the toe "brush the floor" as it goes forward, making a sound. Bring it back to the floor making a second sound. This is called a double-toe. Repeat with the right foot. Again, you are just practicing technique here.
Practice doing the double-toe in time to the music. Try substituting a double-toe for the kicks in the basic step listed above. Count, "double-toe left, step left, step right, step left." Then "double-toe right, step right, step left, step right." This is the third sequence in the dance.
When you are comfortable replacing the kick with the double-toe, add a rock. Get up on the balls of your feet. Step with your left foot, then rock your weight on your right foot slightly behind you, and step again on the left foot. This is a "step, rock, step." Practice this technique until you are comfortable with it.
Put all the elements together. Double-toe left, step, rock, step. Then double-toe right, step, rock, step. Repeat, continuing to alternate feet. This is the fourth and final sequence in this basic step of clogging.
