Cumbia Dance Instructions

Cumbia dance began during the Spanish colonization in popular South American regions such as Colombia and Panama. The dance was typically done to drums and claviers. Cumbia was considered a street dance and the upper middle class generally reviled it as a vulgar dance style. The basic steps for the Cumbia are simple and considered by many to be easy to execute with minimal practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with your feet together and step back with your right foot, pivoting on your left foot as you do. Your right foot should be behind your left foot at this point, with about the width of your shoulders between your two feet.

    • 2

Step with your left foot and bring your right foot back beside your left, pausing slightly for a beat of the music. Move your left foot back again and pivot on your right foot to complete a basic Cumbia cycle, then repeat this same step in the opposite direction.

    • 3

Face front when your feet go together, then turn your right shoulder as you step back with your left foot. Don't keep your arms limp at your sides. Bend your elbows and move your arms in circular motions. Woman may bend their wrists slightly for a feminine touch.
