Renaissance Dance Steps

Dancing in the Renaissance was what every noble did. It was considered good manners and a vital part of social etiquette. This form of dancing was elegant and, because of the clothing fashions for both men and woman that restricted the movements of their upper bodies, stylized. Most of the Renaissance dances were done in a line or a circle.
  1. Double Bransle

    • Stand facing the center of the room with your feet together. If you are dancing in a circle, face the center of the circle. Step to the left with your left foot and bring your right foot to your left. Repeat sequence.

Step to the right with your right foot and bring your left foot to your right. Take a small step to the right with your right foot, and bring your left foot to your right.

Add some variation by adding some kicks. After you take your second, smaller step to the right with your right foot, kick once to the left with your left foot, kick once to the right with your right foot, kick once to the left with your left foot, then pause and repeat the dance from the very beginning. Make your kicks quicker than the steps.

    Single Bransle

    • Step once to the left with your left foot and bring your right foot to your left. Step left again with your left foot and bring your right foot to your left. Step once to the right with your right foot, then kick once to the left with your left foot, kick once to the right with the right foot and once to the left with your left foot.

    Gay Bransle

    • Step left with your left foot. Instead of bringing your right foot to your left, kick your right foot to the right. Bring your right foot to your left and kick your left foot the left. Kick with your right foot to the right, kick the left foot to the left, and then place your foot on the ground and wait for two beats to pass before repeating the pattern.

    Burgundian Bransle

    • Step to the left with your left foot and bring your right foot to your left. Step to the left with your left foot and kick to the left with your right. Step to the right with your right foot and bring your left foot to your right. Take a smaller step to the right with your right foot and kick to the right with your left. This dance has a faster tempo than the ones above.
