Davidic Dance Steps

Davidic dance, sometimes referred to as Messianic dance, is a joyful expression of praise and thanksgiving to God. Many Davidic dance steps are taken from traditional Israeli dances; others have been created by Messianic believers. Messianic means Jews who have accepted Christ as the Messiah. The steps range from simple to a bit more complex. All dances are done in a circle, and all ages and genders are welcome. Beginners are usually welcomed into the circle and encouraged to learn as they dance. Davidic dance is fun, graceful and a beautiful display of faith and worship.

    • Mayim is also known as crossover or grapevine. Mayim is a simple traveling step. To travel to the right, cross the right foot over the left, take the left foot to the side, then cross right foot behind the left; take the left foot out to the side again. To travel left, reverse the steps. This step can be repeated as needed.

    • This step is pronounced "chicosia." Cross the left foot over the right, put weight on the left foot and slightly lift right foot, put right foot down, then return left foot to center. Repeat starting with right foot.

    Yemenite

    • For the Yemenite step, take a small step to the right, transferring weight to the right foot, then back to the left foot. Bring right foot in front of the left foot and put weight on right foot. Take a small step to the left and put weight on left foot, then back on right foot. Put left foot in front of right and put weight on left foot.

    Hora

    • The Hora is a series of small, quick steps. Step right, then left right left on that spot. Then step left, then right left right.

    Praise Step

    • Hands are held high with palms up. Step one foot forward and shift weight to forward foot, then shift to back foot again.

    Drag Step

    • Step right foot forward with foot flexed and weight on heel, drag left foot to right foot. Repeat starting with left foot. If desired, after using both steps the dancer can take two steps back into the circle to keep proper spacing.
