High-fashion shoes were an essential part of the 1970s dance outfit. There were thigh-high boots and sparkling high heels for women, and platform shoes, six inches and higher, for both men and women.
Flared trousers or bell bottoms were popular dancing attire for men. A vest, often worn with buttons undone, over a silk or polyester shirt with wide lapel collars, was often seen on men in the clubs. A shaped sport jacket with wide lapels was optional. An example of this can be seen on John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever." Black and white color combinations were popular, as were bright colors. Men could even wear pink.
Disco dance outfits for women included short (mid-thigh) dresses with bell sleeves. Dresses were typically form fitting and often decorated with glittering sequins to take advantage of the lighting in disco dance clubs. Flared polyester pants could also be worn. Multi-colored patterns were common in the disco clubs.
Jewelry was an important part of the 1970s disco dance outfit. For men, gold or silver neck chains worn under open-necked shirts were almost essential. Men also wore medallion necklaces. Women often wore large rings, earrings and necklaces with astrological signs on them.
