Rumba Dance Steps

The Rumba, also known as the "Latin Waltz," is a simple box step in which the dancing couple stays in place on the dance floor. It can be danced in a basic, romantic way or in a more showy way. The Rumba is danced to music in 4/4 time, with the slower step lasting over two counts, and the quick step lasting one count.
  1. Hand Placement

    • Begin the dance in a "closed" position. The male partner's left hand holds the female's right hand, with arms bent at the elbow so they are nearly touching. The woman's left hand rests flat on the man's back, just behind his shoulder, and the man's right hand sits under the woman's shoulder blade.

    Man's Steps

    • The man begins with his left foot stepping forward. Next, he sidesteps with his right foot and brings his left foot to meet the right one. He then steps back with his right foot and sidesteps with his left and, finally, moves his right foot to meet the left one. This basic step is repeated over and over.

    Woman's Steps

    • The woman's steps are a mirror of the man's. To begin, she steps back with her right foot, sidesteps with her left foot, then brings her right foot to meet the left one. She then steps forward with her left foot, sidesteps with her right, and moves her left foot to meet the right foot. Once again, these steps are repeated.
