How to Get Noticed at a Dancing Audition

Any time you decide to audition for a dance production, you can expect a large number of dancers who are just as good as you or better to audition as well. Therefore, it's important that you make sure that you get noticed over the others. It's up to you to make the effort to stand out to increase your chances of getting the part.
  1. Preparation

    • Preparing yourself for your dance audition should be your top priority. Research the part you're auditioning for so that you know the style and moves that the judges will look for. If you must perform a specific piece, practice it for at least a few weeks before your audition to lessen your chances of making a mistake. While judges won't necessarily pick a flawless performance over others, the fewer mistakes you make, the better your chances. In addition, make sure you bring everything you will need to the audition, including proper attire, required documentation and first aid supplies.

    Show Enthusiasm

    • When choosing the right dancer for the part, most judges will look for someone who truly enjoys dancing. A dancer who enjoys what she does works harder and shows more dedication. Smile while you perform, carry yourself tall and proud, and keep a positive attitude. Avoid spending too much time alone before the audition. While it's okay to spend some time mentally preparing yourself for the audition, it's also important to mingle with the other dancers.

    Establish Stage Presence

    • One of the most important things the judges look for is stage presence. If you must learn new steps as part of the audition process, position yourself near the front so that the judges can see you. If you hide near the back, they can't see how well you handle instruction. When it's your turn to audition, show your confidence, even if you have to fake it. Concentrate on the choreography and perform the best that you can. If you make a mistake, avoid acknowledging it. Instead, keep dancing as if nothing is wrong. Even if the judges know you made a mistake, they will appreciate your ability to hide your mistakes and work through it.

    Dress Appropriately

    • While dressing in a bright color or outrageous costume may seem like a good way to stand out, it's better to dress appropriately for the type of dance. For instance, ballet dancers should wear a tutu and ballet shoes. A jazz dancer should wear an appropriate jazz outfit. If bold and outrageous are appropriate for that type of dance, feel free to wear something that fits that style; however, some judges are looking for a specific body type or style. Dressing appropriately will let them know if you match what they want. Read all materials carefully for specific instructions on what to wear.

    Act Like a Dancer

    • You will obviously act like a dancer while you perform your choreography for the judges; however, you must carry yourself like a dancer at all times. At many auditions, judges plant themselves throughout the arena to watch and make note of dancers. How you behave in the locker room, backstage or in the hallway may be monitored. Therefore, it's important to act as if you're on stage the entire time that you're at the audition. Show the judges that you're a true professional dancer through your actions to help them remember you when they make their decision.
