How to Get a Script Noticed

Getting a script noticed by a production company is often challenging, but can be very rewarding. When shopping a script around, it is important to know who you want to sell it to, because stage and screen scripts are very different in structure and style. Therefore, before you get your script noticed, you must have a script that has been formatted for a particular production type.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine your target market. Search around for production companies that produce the type of work you have written. If you have written a film script, look for Hollywood production companies. If you have written a TV pilot, look for TV producers. If you have written a play or musical, look for stage producers. Find the names of these companies and individuals by looking in the credits for movies, shows and plays you've seen.

    • 2

Write a cover letter for each producer or production team you planning on sending your script to. Include the script name, your name, your contact information and the production company's name, along with a brief synopsis of the script.

    • 3

Write a resume. This should include your name, address, contact info, education history, work history and awards. Include any accolades you have received that will make you stand out to producers, including experience in film or stage experience and writing awards. Attach this to your cover letter and send one to each production company. Do not include the full script in the initial query.

    • 4

Ask any industry insiders you know put in a good word for you. If you know people in the industry, ask them to hand the script into a producer for you. If you submit a query without connections, you will be at the bottom of the producer's list. If you submit through a connection, you may get fast tracked to the top.

    • 5

Submit your full script to any producers who respond with a statement of interest. Send it by whatever means they prefer (usually they will specify whether they prefer fax, e-mail or snail mail), and include any information they request.
