How to Get Into Go-Go Dancing

Go-go dancing has its roots in the 1960s and the advent of rock and roll. Dancers, mostly female, were hired by discotheques to dance on raised stages continuously throughout the night. Topless or nude dancing is not considered go-go dancing, as most go-go dancers are paid by the club and not through patron tips. Go-go dancing still thrives today, especially in major club circuits such as New York, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Becoming a go-go dancer requires athleticism, stamina and the right moves.

Instructions

    • 1

Trim and tone your body. Watch what you eat and exercise daily, especially aerobic exercise. Include a stretching regimen to your routine to keep yourself limber.

    • 2

Maintain your personal appearance. Clubs hire dancers based on their looks and their moves, so make sure that you hair is maintained well, and consider getting a tan by sunbathing, indoor tanning or spray-on tanning.

    • 3

Learn as many dance moves as you can. Stay on top of trends in dancing and research what is popular now. Take dancing lessons on various styles of individual dance, including ballet, jazz, modern and hip-hop. Train with an private instructor, if possible.

    • 4

Wear the right clothes. Choose clothes that are sexy, but not overtly so -- that kind of dancing is done elsewhere. Choose clothes similar to the kind you would wear out on a date to a dance club.

    • 5

Find out who does the hiring for the clubs in your area and contact them. Some clubs hire go-go dancers themselves, but most contract out to an agency. Create a portfolio with head shots and full-length photos of you in your dance outfits showing off your moves. Consider making a burnable DVD of you in action to include.

Make a name for yourself on the local circuit. Go out to the clubs every chance you get -- consider each night out as an audition. If someone from the club or an agency likes what they see, they will contact you.
