Decide if you would like to wear your kilt in the traditional style or if you are aiming for an edgier appearance.
Adjust your kilt so that it sits comfortably around your waist. Measure the length from your waist to mid-knee. This is the most standard length to wear your kilt. There is some slight leeway in regards to acceptable range for the length of your kilt. In general, your kilt should not be any shorter than the top of your kneecap and no longer than mid-knee.
Hem your kilt to the appropriate length. If you are wearing the kilt for a traditional ceremony, such as a wedding or other important occasion, it is essential for your kilt to follow proper codes of etiquette. If you are a competitive Highland dancer, wearing the improper length of kilt can result in the deduction points. If you are simply wearing a kilt as part of a fashion statement, you can wear your kilt at any length. Decide what length feels most comfortable to you, and hem your kilt accordingly.
