How to Activate the Cursor on Kindle

The Kindle cursor is important for a number of functions. Foremost, it enables annotating within your books. It also enables the dictionary function within a text when placed near a word. Activating the cursor on the Kindle is accomplished through the Kindle's 5-way directional pad. On Kindle models with touchscreens, the cursor is replaced by your finger.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the text in which you intend to use the cursor.

    • 2

Navigate to the page where you intend to use the cursor.

    • 3

Press either the up or down key on the 5-way directional pad. Pressing the up key activates the cursor at the bottom of the screen. Pressing the down key activates the cursor at the top of the screen.

    • 4

Navigate to the location where you wish to use the cursor. If you want to look up a word, leave the cursor in front of the word. The definition appears at the bottom of the screen. To create a note, begin typing. To create a highlight, press the center of the 5-way directional pad. If you do not select an area after entering highlighting mode, the Kindle creates a bookmark when you press the center of the 5-way controller again.
