If you are a published writer, the Canada Council for the Arts is a great place to seek a grant. The council offers numerous awards in various categories with different deadlines. It also has literary residencies, music residencies and other funds for artists. Typical Canada Council awards include: the Grant for Creative Writers (Oct. 1 deadline), the Spoken Word and Storytelling Program (April 15 deadline) and Travel Grants for Professional Writers (rolling deadline).

The Association of Canadian Publishers keeps a running list of grants, retreats and workshops for writers of all kinds. Specific organizations affiliated with ACP offering grants include: Writers Reserve, Works in Progress, Travel Grants and Creative Writing. Deadlines vary, but most are rolling admissions. The Writers' Trust of Canada offers large and small grants to published and aspiring writers. It also offers a writing retreat for writers looking to escape the stress of daily life. Writers' Trust awards include: the Roger Writers Fiction Prize, the Matt Cohen Award, the Vicky Metcalf Award for Children's Writing and the Writers' Trust Nonfiction Award.
