The Writers' Trust of Canada/McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize (formerly The Journey Prize) is a $10,000 annual award for best short story writer. There is also a $2,000 prize for the magazine in which the story is published.
The Marian Engel Award was established by the Writers' Trust of Canada that named the award after the first chair of the Writers' Union of Canada. The award is $15,000 and goes to a female writer for a lifetime of literary achievement.
The Matt Cohen Prize is named after writer Matt Cohen who died in 1999 and who was a founding member of the Writers' Union of Canada. At $20,000, it is one of the largest awards for lifetime achievement.
The Grant MacEwan Author's Award is given for the best author in Alberta, Canada. The prize amount is $25,000 and $1,000 each to three runners-up. Scholarships in the amount of $2,500 go to students ages 16 to 25 who win an essay contest. The essays must reflect the values of the late Dr. Grant MacEwan and be representative of life in Alberta.
Pearson Writers' Trust Non-Fiction Prize is for excellence in non-fiction writing. The award amount is $15,000 for the winner and $2,000 for the finalists.
The Canada Arts Council offers a variety of grants for Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The Council also gives block grants to small publishers and to emerging writers from the Aboriginal bands (tribes).
