Canadian Publishing Grants

The publishing industry has had a challenging decade with the increase in online resources available to readers, so financial issues can present challenges. There are a number of grant opportunities available to Canadian publishers to help offset some of these financial challenges. In general, a publishing company must have already produced some titles and have more than 75 percent Canadian ownership to be eligible for these grants.
  1. Canada Council for the Arts

    • The Canada Council offers a number of grant opportunities for Canadian publishers. Publishing houses that have released fewer than 15 titles may qualify for an Emerging Publisher Grant of between $5,000 and $30,000, and more established publishing houses may qualify for a Block Grant, for which the amounts are calculated based on past production. The Canada Council also offers grants for translation, author tours, the production of art books and the publication of literary and art magazines; grant amounts for these programs range between $1,500 and $25,000 per year. The Flying Squad program offers grants of up to $10,000 to allow publishing companies to hire outside consultants or mentors to assist with business and artistic development.
