Novel Writing Grants

A novel-writing grant is a merit-based monetary award given to a writer in order to allow the writer to focus on the completion of a fiction novel as a full-time job. These awards are generally given through a contest that is judged on the basis of a submission (either of a writing sample or a story). Many famous authors, including JK Rowling, have been the recipients of grants. Forms of grants include simple monetary awards with no strings attached to monthly stipends with requirements, to being named a writer in residence at a university or organization.
  1. George Bennett Fellowship

    • The George Bennett Fellowship is offered by Philips Exeter Academy. The school provides meals and housing for the writer for a academic year, as well as a stipend (currently $12,600) to allow the recipient to focus on writing. The writer in turn provides informal guidance, advice, and criticism to the students of the academy and to work directly with those students in English classes and in literary clubs or organizations.

    Alfred Hodder Fellowship

    • The Alfred Hodder Fellowship, offered by Princeton University, is a fellowship for writers that are in their early career stages but have not yet gotten recognition for their works or sold a manuscript. The Fellowship pays the writer a set stipend ($63,900 for the 2011-12 Fellowship) for the writer to spend an academic year on the Princeton campus working on independent projects.

    Gift of Freedom Award

    • The Gift of Freedom award is a $50,000 stipend presented by the A Room of Her Own Foundation (AROHO) and is specifically for female writers. The award is given to poets and journalists as well as writers of fiction. Recipients focus on their own work as well as provide guidance to attendants of AROHO writing camps and retreats.
