Canadian Recording Grants

The costs for equipment, technicians, session musicians and studio space make professional recording an extremely expensive activity. Though the digital revolution and new recording software available to everyone has made high quality amateur recording more accessible, professional level recording still requires significant financial resources. There are a number of Canadian agencies that offer recording grants to Canadian artists and recording organizations.
  1. FACTOR

    • The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings (FACTOR) is a nonprofit organization that aims to assist the development of the Canadian independent recording industry. Various grants are available, from the Demo Program, which provides grants of up to $2,000 for the recording of a demo by a new artist, to the Juried Sound Recording Program, which provides grants of up to $25,000 for the recording of a full-length album by a Canadian artist on a Canadian label. Grants of up to $20,000 per year are also available for the development of record labels and distributors through the Label, Manager and Distributor Business Development program.

    Canada Music Fund

    • The Canada Music Fund is a Canadian government grant program managed by the Department of Canadian Heritage. The Music Entrepreneur Aid to Canadian Sound Recording Firms offers support for established Canadian music recording organizations to become more competitive nationally and internationally. Funding for this program is based on the applicant recording organization's previous sales, and eligible applicants can receive between $200,000 and $650,000 per year. Applicants must have been operating for at least three years and sold a minimum of 150,000 units of Canadian sound recordings in that period to qualify.

    Canada Council for the Arts

    • The Canada Council for the Arts is a Canadian government agency that provides grant funding for artists and projects across the artistic spectrum. The Grants for Specialized Music Distribution Program, which included grants for recording, was canceled in 2009, but the Canada Council still offers some smaller recording grant programs. The Aboriginal Media Arts program offers grants of $3,000 to $20,000 for aboriginal artists to produce art, including recordings. The Spoken Word and Storytelling Program offers grants of between $1,000 and $25,000 for recordings of non-conventional literary works.
