Environmental Book Writing Grants

Authors striving to complete or publish a book on an environmental theme may apply for funding from several professional organizations. Grants are available to help writers defray research and travel costs connected with their book projects. The Fund for Investigative Journalism, the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, and the Society of Environmental Journalists have established grant programs to help aspiring authors.
  1. Fund for Investigative Journalism

    • Since 1969, the Fund for Investigative Journalism has financially supported authors and journalists striving to publish or broadcast a story of issue or concern, including ones on environmental topics. More than $1.5 million in grants have been given, according to the fund, and more than 50 books have been published. The fund meets throughout the year to evaluate proposals, and all awarded grantees get half of the funds upon approval. When the project is completed, the grantee receives the remainder of the funds if all requirements are met and the project is completed in a timely fashion. All proposals should be submitted online.

    Sigma Delta Chi Foundation

    • The Sigma Delta Chi Foundation works with the Society of Professional Journalists in awarding more than $300,000 annually to writers pursuing journalism-related projects, such as the publication of an environmental book, according to the foundation. In addition to writing projects, other previously funded projects have included training events, festivals, and conferences. The board of directors of the foundation meets twice a year, and typically the board reviews grant proposals in the spring. Applications are accepted in January of each year.

    Society of Environmental Journalists

    • The Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) sponsors a Fund for Environmental Journalism that supports journalists who strive to enhance the quality of news stories and journalistic projects about environmental issues. Journalists working on an environmental-related book may be eligible to receive funding of up to $2,500. This grant can help fund expenses ranging from travel costs to research to training, according to the SEJ. Proposals are typically due on the 15th of July and November annually.
