Point your web browser to commonly used resources for free drum samples, such as FreeSound, KB6, and VoxxLab's Learn To Share Project, or search the web for "royalty free drum samples."
Find a sample kit, or collection of related drum sounds designed to be used together, and download it to a directory on your computer.
Download and install Audacity and Linux Multimedia Studio cross-platform software for audio processing and digital music production.
Launch Linux Multimedia Studio (LMMS) and find the Song Editor window, which contains a timeline and a list of tracks for your project. The list of tracks will contain several empty tracks: a "default preset" track, a "sample track," a "beat/bassline" track and an "automation" track. For this drum sequencing project, you will use only sample tracks.
Clone the sample track to create an empty track for each drum sample you intend to use in the project. To clone a track click on the Track Action icon to the left of the track name --- denoted by a crossed screwdriver and wrench. Select "Clone this track" from the menu that appears.
Load each of your samples into a separate sample track. To load a sample into a sample track, double click on the track in the time-line section of the Song Editor window. When the "Open Audio File" dialogue box appears, browse to the directory where you saved your samples and pick one. Repeat until all of your samples are loaded into the project.
Click the "Play" icon in the upper left-hand corner of the Song Editor window, denoted by a right-facing arrowhead. This will play your drum pattern as you create it and allow you to make adjustments and corrections and hear them in real time.
Begin clicking buttons on each track on the time line, each of which is made up of a single row of buttons. Each button denotes a specific beat or subdivision of a beat where LMMS will trigger, or play, a sample. You can hear the sample play whenever the playback cursor passes over it. To deactivate a button, right-click on it and select "Delete" from the menu that appears.
Select "Export" from the Project menu when you are happy with your drum part. Name your drum part in the dialogue box that appears, choose a directory and click "Save."
Browse to the directory you specified and double-click on the file to hear your original drum part made from samples.
