How to Set Up an EZ Drummer Track

EZ Drummer is a stand-alone MIDI drum editing plug-in for use with digital audio work stations. It typically offers a more intuitive and flexible drum editor interface than native drum editors. The EZ Drummer interface approximates the layout of a real kit and has a range of groove templates and playing style options, so you can create, edit and export realistic-sounding beats to use in your own composition. Because it is not a native instrument, you need to set up a drum track before recording.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click the desktop icon to launch your preferred digital audio work station, such as Logic, Cubase or Pro Tools.

    • 2

Create a MIDI track. The method for doing this varies slightly according to the work station program you use, but you typically execute this command via the "File" menu. For example, if using Logic, press "File," then "New MIDI Track." Alternatively, typical programs have a shortcut tab.

    • 3

Double-click where it says "MIDI 1" and type "Drums" or "Drum Track." If you plan on sequencing each drum to a separate track, open a MIDI track for each drum so you can execute more control over each drum. For example, you can apply separate effects to each drum, rather than just the kit as a whole. However, this approach is much slower and less intuitive than creating a single beat in one go.

    • 4

Open the "Plugins" menu and select "EZ Drummer." This launches EZ Drummer in a separate window.

    • 5

Click on a drum to highlight it. Scroll through the options on the menu to select a specific sound for that drum. To audition a sound, click on the drum again. Repeat this process until you have your preferred selection of drum sounds.

    • 6

Adjust the level of each drum by moving the "Level" slider dials on the right. Each is labeled according to which drum it controls.

    • 7

Click in the "Tempo" box and type in your preferred tempo. The tempo is measured in beats per minute, or BPM. The EZ Drummer default tempo is 120 BPM. To set a faster tempo, increase this figure.
