Press "Mode." The LED light on the MPC 1000 should begin blinking. While the light is still blinking, press "Pad 6" to activate trim mode.
Select the drum sample you just recorded by hitting the pad the drum sample is assigned to. Slowly turn the data wheel to gradually play the drum sample. Stop when you come to the beginning of a drum sound you'd like to use (such as the beginning of a snare drum roll). Simultaneously press the "Shift" and left/right cursor to mark the beginning of the sound. Slowly turn the data wheel until you come to the end of the selected drum sound. Simultaneously press the "Shift" and left/right cursor to mark the end of the sound.
Push "Pad 1" to play back the sample from the marked start and end points. If the drum sound you want to capture has been isolated properly, press the "F6" key to display Sample Edit window. Select "Extract."
Enter a name for the sample extraction you are about to create in the "New name" field. For example, if you are extracting a snare drum sound, you could name the sample extract "sample."
Press "F5" to save the marked sound as a new sample, with its own sample pad assignment. Repeat steps 1 through 5 until you have created a sample of all of the drum sounds you need (for example, kick drum, snare drum and cymbals).
Press the "Main" key. Select "Unused" from the list of sequence options. Select the track number you want to use to record your performance as you overdub the sample drum sounds you just created to another MPC 1000 sample.
Turn the data wheel to select a program in the device's internal memory as your sound source. This will allow you to use the MPC 1000's drum pads to record a track performance.
Simultaneously press and hold the "Play Start" and "Rec" key to initiate the four-second countdown which begins your track recording.
Hit the drum pads assigned to the samples you want to play. For example, if a guitar riff sample is assigned to Pad 1, a kick-drum sample assigned to Pad 2, and a snare-drum sample assigned to Pad 3, and you want to add kick and snare drum sounds to the guitar riff, hit Pad 1. And as the guitar-riff sample plays out, hit Pads 2 and 3 to overdub the kick and snare sounds in places where you want them.
Press "Stop" to end the track recording.
