Indy Music Festivals

Music festivals are large events, typically lasting for more than one day, where an array of musical artists perform for thousands of people. They are an ideal way for many artists to gain exposure and allow music fans to sample many different and new artists. A good number of festivals highlight independent artists.
  1. Sasquatch! Music Festival

    • The Sasquatch! Music Festival is held annually in George, Washington, at The Gorge Amphitheater. The festival heavily focuses on indy rock bands and singer-songwriters, allowing them to expand their audience and increase their visibility. Bands perform for four days on four stages, and tickets can be purchased for a single day or the complete event. Camping is available for attendees as well.

    Bonnaroo

    • Bonnaroo is a music and arts festival that occurs in Manchester, Tennessee, every year for four days in June. Held on 700 acres, the festival brings indy artists from many different genres, including indy pop, indy rock, jazz, world music, hip-hop and electronica. In addition to offering music on multiple stages, there is a 100-acre entertainment village with an arcade, comedy club, cinema and beer festival, in addition to many pieces of art. All festival attendees can camp onsite with tents or RVs.

    Pitchfork Music Festival

    • Pitchfork is a website dedicated to independent music. It has reviews, bios on upcoming artists and indy music news posted daily. In 2006, it started its own festival that occurs annually in Chicago. It features solely music artists, rather than highlighting indy music, while featuring major-label headliners. Some of the artists in the 2011 lineup, for instance, include Woods, Animal Collective and Cut Copy.

    Summerfest

    • Summerfest has been happening every year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, since 1968. It currently bills itself as "The World's Largest Music Festival." It lasts for 11 days and presents over 700 musical groups performing across 11 stages. As with most festivals, some non-indy artists do grace Summerfest's stages, but the majority of the music comes from independent artists. Summerfest is also notable for allowing smaller local bands to play, an opportunity not usually offered at big festivals.
