Indie Music Festivals

There are many festivals, some famous and some not, that showcase independent musicians and music genres outside of the mainstream. Whether you're looking for a festival with a long history, a large crowd or an eclectic lineup, there are a wide range of festivals to choose from every year.
  1. Electronic Music

    • In 2010, the biggest electronic dance music festival in the country was the Electric Daisy Carnival, with an attendance estimated over 200,000. Headliners in 2010 included Moby, Deadmau5 and MSTRKRFT. Traditionally held in Los Angeles, California, the festival moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2011. The environmentally friendly Sonic Bloom festival made its debut in 2006 just outside of Ft. Collins, Colorado. The festival moved to Shadows Ranch in Georgetown, Colorado in 2011. The Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Florida, which started in 1999, attracts more than 100,000 people every year.

    Niche Festivals

    • The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco, California, has celebrated bluegrass and more since 2001. Headliners in 2010 included Elvis Costello and The Avett Brothers. Jazzfest in New Orleans, Louisana, is a 10-day event highlighting notable jazz and rock musicians. The Nateva Music and Camping festival in Oxford, Maine launched in 2010. It brings together indie rock, bluegrass and electronica artists in a jam band experience. Headliners at the inaugural show included Thievery Corporation and The Gregg Allman Band.

    Various Genres

    • Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction started Lollapalooza as a tour in 1991. The tour concept eventually burned out, but in 2005 Lollapalooza was reborn as a weekend festival in Chicago. It features rock, punk and electronic musicians and draws crowds of over 100,000. Its 2010 headliners included Soundgarden and Arcade Fire. Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee is the biggest annual pop music festival in the east. Its annual crowds also exceed 100,000, and its lineup mixes up-and-coming indie stars with established headliners like Jay-Z. Its counterpart out west is the Coachella Festival. Coachella, which began in 1993, presents indie rock, hip-hop and electronica acts over a weekend in Indio, California. Headliners in 2010 included The Black Keys and Robyn.

    Music and More

    • The South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) established itself as an industry networking event shortly after its debut in 1987. It also hosts a major film festival. Unlike most festivals where the action takes place in a central location over a weekend, the SXSW acts perform in multiple venues in Austin, Texas, over 10 days. In 2010, SXSW featured more than 2,000 bands. Noisepop in San Francisco, California has showcased stars on the rise, along with film and art, since 1993. Its 2011 headliners included Ben Gibbard and Peanut Butter Wolf. Snow Ball in Avon, Colorado, combines electronic music with winter sports. The Flaming Lips and Diplo headlined its inaugural 2011 event.
