Northwest Music Festivals

The Pacific Northwest region is home to indie and rock music epicenters, including Seattle, which was the birthplace of grunge music in the 1990s. Two of the largest cities in the Northwest -- Seattle and Portland -- also host classical and jazz concerts; some hotels in these cities provide transportation to the concert events. Other activities at music festivals include classes for working professionals and auctions.
  1. Decibel Festival

    • The Decibel Festival is in Seattle, Washington and occurs over a five-day period. This festival hosts electronic music acts. The first year of this annual festival was 2003. Decibel Festival's primary venues are in the Capitol Hill and downtown Seattle districts. Some of the music venues for the festival include the Baltic Room, Pravda Studios and Sole Repair. Electronic music professionals have access to workshops and panels.

    Portland Jazz Festival

    • Also called PDX Jazz, the Portland Jazz Festival occurs in the city's downtown area every February. Over 120 jazz musician acts play in venues such as the Winningstad Theater, Art Bar, Riverplace Hotel and PCC Cascade Auditorium. This 10-day music festival has been a Portland tradition since 2004. Each year, the Portland Jazz Festival introduces a genre of music aside from jazz; past genres include Scandinavian and New Orleans Dixieland.

    Bellingham Festival of Music

    • Situated in Bellingham, Washington, the Bellingham Festival of Music occurs annually throughout the month of July. The festival features classical music performances by the 40-piece Bellingham Symphony Orchestra. Masters classes are available for musicians and conductors. The Bellingham Symphony hosts a Dinner and Auction party every year at the Bellingham Country Club to raise money for the festival. The festival's inaugural year was 1993.

    Apple Jam Music Festival

    • The three-day Apple Jam Music Festival is a small grassroots music festival that occurs in Williams, a city in southern Oregon's Applegate Valley region. This festival's music genres include country western, bluegrass and folk. All bands perform at Williams' Provolt Store Property and Stage. Apple Jam Music Festival usually happens on a weekend in mid- or late May. The festival allows pet owners to bring their dogs to the event.

    Sitka Summer Music Festival

    • As the name suggests, Sitka, Alaska, hosts the Sitka Summer Music Festival, or SSMF, annually. This month-long festival happens in June. Festival highlights include eight evening performances of classical chamber music. All of SSMF's evening concerts take place at the Harrigan Centennial Hall, which is Sitka's 18,000 square-foot civic center. Other SSMF events include luncheons, workshops and the Allen Marine Boat Party in Sitka Harbor. The Festival's first year was 1972.
