Atlanta Jazz Bars

If you're looking for a bar offering live jazz in Atlanta, there are a number of spots that will pluck your blue notes and wet your palette. Atlanta is full of great bars featuring a wide range of local jazz performers and national touring artists alike. Included here are the most popular and accessible of the lot.
  1. Cafe 290

    • This classy jazz bar is one of the oldest, most well-known places to hear live jazz in Atlanta. Cafe 290 has been at it for more than two decades and has a reputation for catering to the best local jazz artists and, from time to time, international performers. With a variety of appetizers and entrees, and an extensive beer and wine menu, this is a jazz spot that appeals to all five senses. Cafe 290 specialize in contemporary jazz, but you can often see Atlanta bands improvising classics as varied as "Autumn Leaves" and "A Love Supreme."

    Churchill Grounds

    • Although its name sounds more like a thoroughbred track than a jazz bar, Churchill Grounds has become one of the hippest, most progressive live jazz meccas in the Southeast. Churchill Grounds has weekly jam sessions and, on the weekends, features local artists. If you are willing to pay the $7 to $10 cover (in 2010) to see the best jazz in town, check out Churchill Grounds.

    Sambuca

    • Sambuca's Atlanta location (it's a national chain) sits in the ritzy Buckhead community. The bar is known as much for the quality of its menu as its music. Sambuca distinguishes itself by offering live music every night of the week. It also attracts a diverse crowd that enjoys the sophisticated, sexy atmosphere that accompanies the tunes. Sambuca caters to parties as large as 300.

    Star Lounge

    • The Star Lounge is quickly building a reputation as one of Atlanta's best bars to see live jazz on the weekend. It caters to a mature crowd, with jazz and blues enjoyed over large plates of pasta, steak or seafood at candlelit tables. There is a cover charge for the Friday night show, but food prices are reasonable, and the music lasts until midnight. Don't show up in jeans. There is an unwritten dress code, and most guests err on the side of classy.
