Jazz Clubs in Atlanta

Jazz is a genre of music that began in the late 19th century in the southern parts of the United States. Since that time it has spawned many sub-genres and famous musicians, such as Miles Davis and Sun Ra. While jazz is not as popular as it was in the 1920s through the '40s (and many historical clubs have since closed), there are still some notable clubs and cities that cater to jazz regularly. Atlanta is one of those places.
  1. Cafe 290

    • Jazz bass player

Cafe 290 was founded in 1981 with the intent of giving exposure to Atlanta's best jazz musicians. The club is open seven days a week from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Celebrities like Tyler Perry, Dave Chappelle, Jamie Foxx, and Chris Tucker occasionally make an appearance to perform or to just watch whoever is playing that night. Aside from hosting music, Cafe 290 is also a restaurant that serves dishes including pasta, seafood, chicken and steak. Some of the musicians who have played regularly at Cafe 290 include bassist John Roberts, pianist William Green and saxophonist Reggie Hines.

    Churchill Grounds

    • Drums play a big part in jazz.

Churchill Grounds is a club that primarily provides what it calls "classic" jazz, but the musicians who play there still perform original songs. There is no set calendar at Churchill Grounds, except that there is no music on Monday nights and most Sunday nights. There is an exclusive room at the club called the "whisper room" for parties, meetings, etc. Some of the regular performers at Churchill Grounds have included Cedar Walton, Freddie Cole, Donald Harrison and Marcus Printup. The club owners also claim to be searching for and providing a venue for "the next" Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, etc.
