Indianapolis Jazz Bars

Indianapolis has a little jazz in its step with several clubs dedicated to live jazz performance. Indy's jazz fever has extended to the creation of the Indianapolis Jazz Fest. Besides checking out the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra, or seeing national jazz acts at concert venues like The Murat or Clowes Hall, you can grab a drink, a meal, and find hot jazz every night of the week in Indianapolis if you know where to look.
  1. The Chatterbox Jazz Club

    • For more than 26 years The Chatterbox has presented live jazz at least five days a week. The club is located in downtown Indianapolis in the “Mass Ave” cultural district. Throughout the week they have many performances with no cover charge, and when there is no one on stage, they have a fully stocked jazz jukebox. Besides the music, the Chatterbox serves food and offers monthly wine tastings.

Most nights have a cover charge, although ladies are often admitted free to the Jazz Kitchen's weekly Latin Dance Party. The club's acts range in genre and include local and national acts. The Jazz Kitchen is a major supporter of the local jazz scene, founding The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation and hosting the after party of the Indianapolis Jazz Fest.

    The Slippery Noodle Inn

    • If you like your jazz a little "bluer," head to The Slippery Noodle Inn in downtown Indianapolis, just south of the Circle. Their motto is "Dis-is-it!,"and it certainly is something special. The Slippery Noodle is Indiana's oldest bar, founded in 1850, and has been used as an Underground Railroad stop, a brothel and a gun range for the Brady & Dillinger gangs. They have live jazz and blues performances seven nights a week, with two separate stages operating on Friday and Saturday. The club has a full menu, and cigar smoking permitted after 10 p.m.

    Sullivan's Steakhouse

    • With 19 restaurants across the country, it may not have a small jazz club feel, but Sullivan's is all about “steaks, martinis and jazz.” Sullivan's has live jazz entertainment in their bar seven days a week, featuring their baby grand piano. Of particular interest is “Swinging at Sully's,” a seasonal jazz event on select Thursdays, with drink discounts and special performances.
