Research the different methods. The methods for teaching children piano can be divided into three different types of categories. First, emphasizing position playing rather than individual notes. This method incorporates color pictures, graphics and software. Second, teaching music reading skills and music theory. This is a more traditional approach that concentrates teaching piano fundamentals. Third, learning to play by ear. Ensemble playing is an essential aspect of this method.
Select the method that best suits your child. Take the time to talk to piano instructors who use the different methods. They will be able to offer information and advice that will help you make your decision.
Evaluate the method by asking four questions. Does it nurture your child's interest in the piano? The best method should motivate and inspire your child to practice and play. Is your child making progress? The progress may be gradual and incremental but it should be noticeable. Is your child having fun? This is the most important question. It will determine if your child stays with the piano.
Try a different method. If the method that you have selected isn't working particularly well a different one may be a better choice.
