Started in 1993, this festival is known as being more soul oriented than other jazz festivals. And it has grown to become the largest contemporary jazz festival in the United States.
The Capital Jazz Fest attracts not only famous musicians but also local singers and bands. Grammy Award winners such as Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle and saxophonist Kenny G are just a few of the well-known performers who have taken the Capital Jazz Fest stage. The "Catch A Rising Star" showcase features up-and-coming talent.
The Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, is home to the Capital Jazz Fest. This venue is conveniently located between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland. Merriweather is situated on 40 acres of wooded land known as Symphony Woods. Festival patrons can relax under the covered pavilion or stretch out on the lawn.
Capital Jazz Fest attendees can enjoy arts and crafts displays at the Festival Marketplace, tasty concoctions at the food court, and performer meet & greets.
