How to Fix a Stratched CD With Egg

Compact discs skip in your CD player when the internal laser has difficulty reading the depressions in the surface of the disc due to scratches. Scratched CDs often skip or do not play at all, especially on older CD players with weaker lasers. Many commercial CD scratch removers and cleaners are available from music and electronic stores, but some of these scratches can be repaired with a homemade CD repair cloth made from common household products.

Things You'll Need

  • Microfiber cloth
  • Scissors
  • Egg white
  • Small saucepan
  • 1 tsp. alum

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a small square of clean microfiber cloth. About three square inches should be enough.

    • 2

Separate one egg white into a small saucepan. Measure 1 tsp. of alum (a mixture of aluminum sulfate and potassium sulfate) and add to the egg white. Dissolve the alum in the egg white over low heat. Make sure the temperature does not exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 3

Place your square of microfiber cloth into the 150-degree egg mixture and let it soak until it is saturated with the mixture.

    • 4

Lay the wet cloth on an aluminum-lined baking sheet and place in a 300-degree Fahrenheit oven until the cloth dries.

    • 5

Rinse the dry cloth in cold running water for about 30 seconds. Repeat steps 3 to 5 three times. Let the cloth air dry at room temperature for 48 hours.

    • 6

Wipe your scratched CD in small circular motions with the dry microfiber cloth until scratches disappear.
